Homemade Taco Seasoning

August 11, 2024 By Grumpy

Less salt, no fillers…  much better than the packets…

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon chili powder

  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin

  • 1 teaspoon paprika (smoked or sweet)

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano

  • ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)

  • ½ teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)

  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients in a small bowl and mix well.

  2. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place — it will keep for up to 6 months.

  3. To use: Brown your meat, drain if necessary, then sprinkle the seasoning evenly over it. Add ½ cup water and simmer for 5 minutes until thickened.

💡 Adjustments & Tips

  • Less Spicy: Skip the red pepper flakes or reduce chili powder by ½ tablespoon.

  • More Depth: Add ½ teaspoon cocoa powder — yes, it adds a rich note without tasting like chocolate.

  • For Veggies or Beans: Use the same method, but simmer with a splash of vegetable broth instead of water.
